The CIH or Chernobyl Virus
CIH 1.2 launches itself every April 26th. (It also goes by the name "Chernobyl" because it's timed for the anniversary of the Russian nuclear accident.) This one wipes out your hard drive and can even keep your PC from booting up. It's a mean piece of code that's been showing up for months. But Monday's version is said to be the most dangerous. CIH started in Asia last summer and attacks on the 26th of each month. The most potent version, though, shows up on April 26. It gets the name "space filler" for its ability to secretly fill space, thereby making detection more difficult. We recommend installing the latest anti-virus software to catch the bug. If you have recently upgraded your virus detector, due to last month's Melissa scare, you are most likely OK. Since this pesky CIH virus has just damaged hundreds of thousands of hard disk drives, Steve Gibson created a new FREEWARE program to recover from this problem . . . even AFTER the virus has wiped out a drive! This program quickly recovers FAT32 formatted drives from the damage done by the CIH virus. (Note: Unfortunately, it will not be able to help non-FAT32 formatted drives.) Click Here for Steve's FREE CHI recovery program. The best virus protection is a good Anti-Virus program. Click Here for a list of many of the anti-virus companies. We, at J.R. Whipple & Associates, recommend Trend Micro's anti-virus products. I hope this helps you keep and maintain a proper and safely running computer.
