You can get this bug in only one way. If you receive an email with an attachment with the name Happy99.EXE and you execute it, by double clicking on the attachment, you will get infected. Don't execute it, just delete it and you will be fine. If you believe that your computer has been infected it is relatively easy to remove it. The following procedure will help you determine if your Windows 95 or 98 computer has been infected and how to remove this little bug:
CD\WINDOWS\SYSTEM then press the Enter key. Remember these are BACK-SLASHES not forward slashes! ( The asterisk is mandatory ) If you see a file with the name WSOCK32.SKA you've been infected! If all you see is WSOCK32.DLL congratulations, you're clean. WSOCK32.DLL is an important component of your email program. The Happy99 bug has replaced this file with one of its own and kept the original by renaming it to WSOCK32.SKA So it becomes an easy matter to delete the bad WSOCK32.DLL file and rename the WSOCK32.SKA back to its original name, WSOCK32.DLL . Do this by the following:
Make sure you are at the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM> DOS prompt.
(Notice: There is one space between DEL and WSOCK… and one space between REN and WSOCK… and one space between WSOCK32.SKA and WSOCK32.DLL )
Reboot your computer. All should be well.
Notice: You can't test by sending email to someone that you have recently sent to with the Happy99 virus. Remember it keeps a database and will only send one of its self to any one recipient.
